The 1st Modern Olympics.
On 6 April 1896, the Games of the First Olympiad were
opened in Athens, Greece. The athletes and crowd listened to a speech by the president of the Organising
Committee Crown Prince (later king) Constantine of Greece and his father King
George I of Greece
declared the Games opened. The Olympic Hymn was then performed. 241 athletes
from 14 nations competed in 43 events covering 9 sports.
